Presidents message: Welcome Summer!

As our hockey and school season ends I wanted to wish everyone a safe and fun-filled summer. At BC Hockey’s AGM this past weekend, I watched a recent video where our Hockey Canada CEO,  Tom Renney shares his thoughts about the value of summer opportunities for our kids to play different sports or continue with hockey in less structured ways. His “Tom’s Talks” video can be seen at: https://video.hockeycanada.ca/en/c/hcc-toms-talks-april-2019.102848

We had a record turn out at our AGM last month, thank you to everyone who turned out to listen to the candidates and to all the candidates who put their name in for a position.  A huge thank you to outgoing board members Jodi Visco, Mike Oddy, Jen Robillard, Jamie Young, and Trevor Bamford for their many years of service to the association. As well a big thank you to Janine Rizzo for her work for the last 4 years as AMHA president as she moves into the Past President role.

Following the elections, the current board members are:

1st Vice President: Mandy Gill (2nd year of 2-year term)

2nd Vice President: Michele Dominato (1st year of 2-year term)

Treasurer: Vicki Heese (2nd year of 2-year term)

Past president: Janine Rizzo

Directors: Dan VanDokkumburg (New- 2-year term)

Michelle Mitchell (New- 2-year term)

Even Pandher (New- 2-year term)

Tracey Purvis (New- 2-year term)

Jason Weinberg (2nd year of 2-year term)

Historian: Lochie Bell (1-year term)

At the AGM we also heard some key themes from our membership that the board will focus on over the coming months as we are working hard planning for next season. These include ensuring a plan for player development, improving support to ensure successful tournaments and ensuring we have good member engagement and communication with our volunteers as we move forward.

We know that volunteers are crucial for a non- profit organization such as AMHA and we are lucky to have such amazing and talented volunteers (as well as great paid staff- thank you Rhonda!)

Thank you to all the coaches and coordinators who have stepped up already, we are well on our way to a successful 2019-20 season. Having a good pool of diverse volunteers helps us ensure that we can keep the association running at as low a cost as possible. In the next few weeks we will be sharing our need for several new volunteer positions such as tournament, development and fundraising coordinators, all of which will need to be in place prior to September,  so please watch for these emails and consider whether you can provide support to the association by stepping into one of these positions.

Whether you are spending your summer by the rink or pursuing other activities with your family, wishing all our members a great summer and we will see you at the rink in the fall.

Kathy Doull

AMHA President
